Scared the Market Will Crash? Here’s What I Learned Buying My First Home in 2008

Fear in the market is real, and I get it. As a coach and a realtor, I’ve worked with people on the edge of big decisions, and buying a home is one of the biggest. With the word “crash” floating around again, I want to share my own story with you.

🏠 I Bought My First Home in 2008… Then the Market Crashed

That’s right. I bought my first home in 2008, and by 2009, the housing market took a serious dive. The value dropped, the economy was shaky, and there was plenty of doubt and fear.

Not long after buying the home, I had a family emergency that forced me to relocate unexpectedly. I couldn’t live in the house anymore, so I turned it into a rental property. Eventually, I ended up selling it.

But here’s the thing:
Even after all that market crash, emergency move, unexpected shift, I still came out ahead. If I still owned that home today, it would be worth double what I paid for it.

📈 Real Estate is a Long Game

In coaching, we talk about the difference between quick wins and long-term growth. Buying a primary residence is about the long game. It’s about building equity, planting roots, and investing in your future not timing the market perfectly.

Trying to "wait out" the market often leads to missed opportunities. I’ve seen it happen. Prices go up. Interest rates change. Inventory tightens. The perfect moment rarely exists. What matters more is buying when it’s right for you, financially and personally.

🔑 Here’s What I Tell My Clients Now

  • You’re not just buying a house, you’re buying stability, freedom, and a foundation.

  • Real estate will always have ups and downs, but historically, it trends upward over time.

  • If you're planning to live in your home for 5, 10, or 20+ years, you're investing in something that grows with you.

🏡 Let’s Find the Right Fit

Don’t let fear freeze your momentum. Let’s focus on what you can control, your budget, your goals, and your long-term vision. I’m here to coach you through it every step of the way.
